It’s crazy to think I’m coming up on a year of living in Austin, Texas. Although I’m far from an “Austinite” I’m slowly learning my way around this crazy city. I often get asked my favorite things to do here so I thought I’d share some of them with you guys!
Whether you’ve never been or are visiting for the 100th time there’s always something to do. Growing up in a smaller town then moving to Austin was overwhelming at first with so many things to see and do but my advice is to pick a few and then make a second trip because I know you’ll want to come back 😛
This is a must! Take your fur baby, have a picnic, or for you sporty people it’s the perfect spot to play. If you’re like me just take a speaker or book and enjoy the beautiful skyline view.
Get too hot? Walk on over to Barton Springs.
This is the go-to place, especially in the on a hot day. It has beautiful clear water and is refreshing (some would say freezing). Lay out and relax on the grassy hills and disconnect for awhile. Don’t be scared off by the long line – it goes fast! It’s only $9 for guests and $5 for locals.
Pro tip: Take cash & GO EARLY. It fills up quick, especially on a pretty day. Don’t fight for a parking spot. Park in the open grass lot it’s only $5 for the day and a bit of a walk but worth it when you jump into the cold water.
Ok, forgive me this one is a little touristy but everyone has to see it once! The hike is quick and the view is breathtaking and makes for a beautiful pic!
PRO TIP: Just park along the street & wear the right shoes because the hike is a little steep.
Bat Bridge (Seasonal)
From March to October about 20 minutes before sundown you can see literally millions of bats fly from under the south congress bridge. Trip Savy does a great job of explaining the best viewing spots.
PRO TIP: Bats… poop. So if you’re close enough to the bridge watch out you may feel raindrops that well, aren’t rain.
Limes, Birds, & Razors Oh My
Soon into visiting you’ll notice these electric scooters everywhere. Drivers may hate them but they’re so fun when you don’t feel like walking! These scooters are an easy and cheap way to get around town. Just watch out for cars and people!
PRO TIP: You can ride in the bike lane… don’t be the person running into people on the sidewalk.
Walk the Insta-worthy South Congress
This is a fun strip of shops, cool murals, and food trucks to visit while you’re here! This is home of the famous “i love you more” mural so snap a pic while you’re there.
Paddle Board at Lady Bird Lake
Get out of your comfort zone and be outdoors-y for only $15-20/hr and trust me that will probably be a long enough. It’s fun with great views but harder than it looks and definitely a workout. Learn more at Rowing Dock
Eat at Tyson Tacos
Locals may hate me for giving up this secret but you can thank me later. They have the best queso, quac, and tacos! You can’t go wrong with a B is for Bacon or Rage 2.0.
Go to a Local Coffee Shop
Skip Starbucks and shop local! Let’s just say you could go to a different coffee shop every day for life. It seems like there’s one at every corner. This is something I love but also get overwhelmed with so @coffeeshoppingatx does a great job of diving into all the different shops here around Austin plus they all have different vibes. My favorites include Flightpath, Hanks, Sateen, and Joe’s.
Some say this place is overrated, but they still have killer views! Situated right on Lake Travis, The Oasis is a restaurant/ venue with shops.
PRO TIP: Skip the restaurant, it’s not worth the price but go to the bar on the second level terrace and take in the view.
Shop The Domain
For those who crave the finer things, I would recommend The Domain. They have a ton of shopping, yummy restaurants, and nightlife. Snag a sprinkles cupcake from a vending machine or enjoy the rooftop bar at Rooftop 77. My favorite restaurant there is Yard House. For my 21 and up people they have the Worlds Largest Selection of Beers, yep you read that right they have over 100 beers on tap and did I mention they serve it by the yard?
PRO TIP: There are two sides to the domain be sure to check a map to make sure you park on the side closest to stores you like.
Get A Drink on Rainey Street
This is a go-to, especially for sunday funday! Unfortunately, it is 21 and up but it’s a strip of old homes they’ve turned into bars and it is so much fun. My favorite spots are Icenhauer’s, Lustre Pearl, and by unpopular opinion Unbarlievable, which is circus themed with a slide! What could be better? haha.
PRO TIP: Drinks are expensive so I would suggest pregaming
This is just a handful of the things to do here in Austin. I’m no expert but I’m always looking for new things and having fun as I go!
What did I miss? Have a must see, eat, or do? Comment it below and I’ll add it to the list.
Until next time xo,
Shout out to The Josephine House who let us shoot photos in their cute space!
